David Helfgott, fils d'immigrés polonais en Australie, a appris le piano avec son père, Peter. Brillant, il remporte de multiples récompenses jusqu'au jour où il est remarqué par un musicien renommé qui lui propose de partir aux Etats-Unis afin d'y poursuivre sa formation. Mais Peter s'y oppose farouchement. David obéit et rumine. Les années passent, et quand une nouvelle occasion se présente, David passe outre l'interdit paternel.
